    If you’ve stepped outside in Little Elm today, you already know: this heat is no joke. With the heat index sitting at 105° to 106° through tomorrow, your AC system isn’t just running, it’s working as hard as it can, nonstop, for hours on end. And there’s a quiet side effect of that kind of workload that a lot of homeowners don’t think about until they’re standing in a puddle.

    Why Extreme Heat Means More Condensation Leaks

    Your air conditioner doesn’t just cool the air, it pulls moisture out of it too. That moisture has to go somewhere, and normally it drains away quietly through a condensate line you never think about. But when your system runs this hard, this long, it produces more condensation than usual, and that little drain line is doing overtime right along with the compressor.

    Add in a little bit of dust, algae, or debris that’s built up in that line over the months (completely normal, by the way), and you’ve got a recipe for a clog. When the line clogs and the condensation has nowhere to go, it backs up. And depending on your setup, it can overflow into your attic, down through a ceiling, or pool right around your indoor unit in a closet or utility room.

    What to Look For Today

    Take two minutes and check these while your AC is still running hard:

    • A water stain or soft spot on the ceiling below your attic unit, especially near vents
    • Pooling or dampness around your indoor air handler or closet
    • A musty smell that wasn’t there before
    • Your AC’s emergency shut-off float switch tripping (if your system stops cooling and this is why, that switch is doing its job)
    • Warped baseboards, bubbling paint, or a soft spot in the flooring near the unit

    None of these mean disaster. But every one of them means water is somewhere it shouldn’t be, and it’s worth taking seriously today rather than next week.

    If You Find Standing Water

    First, call your AC company or a technician to get the actual clog or overflow addressed. That’s their expertise, not ours, and getting the source fixed is step one.

    But the water that’s already gotten into your drywall, insulation, or subfloor doesn’t just dry up on its own once the leak is stopped. Materials hold moisture longer than they look like they do, and that hidden moisture is exactly what leads to bigger problems, like mold, down the road.

    If you’re not sure how much has soaked in, that’s a fair question to have answered rather than guess at. A moisture check can tell you in minutes whether it’s a wipe-it-up situation or something that needs real drying equipment behind it.

    Why “It Looks Dry” Isn’t the Whole Story

    This is one I talk about a lot, because it matters. Surfaces dry fast. The structure underneath, the wood, the insulation, the drywall core, holds onto moisture a lot longer than what you can see or touch. A ceiling can look completely fine two days after an AC overflow and still be wet enough underneath to grow mold within a week. That’s not fear-mongering, it’s just how building materials work.

    I can’t promise every AC leak turns into a big problem. Most don’t, especially if they’re caught fast. But I also won’t pretend it’s nothing just because the puddle’s already been mopped up.
