And when a system runs that hard for that long, condensation has to go somewhere. Most of the time it drains away quietly. Sometimes it doesn’t, and that’s when a small drip turns into a ceiling stain, a warped floor, or a moldy patch you don’t find until it’s already spread.

    Let’s talk about why this happens right now, specifically, and what you can check today before it becomes a bigger problem.

    Why extreme heat causes AC condensation leaks

    Every air conditioner pulls moisture out of the air as it cools your home. That moisture collects on the evaporator coil and is supposed to drain out through a condensate line to the outside. On a normal day, that system keeps up just fine.

    But when the heat index hits triple digits, your AC runs longer cycles, more often, for more hours a day. That means more condensation being produced, more volume moving through that little drain line, and more chances for something to go wrong:

    • The condensate line clogs. Algae, dust, and debris build up over time, and a heavy-use week is exactly when a partially clogged line finally backs up all the way.
    • The drain pan overflows. Pans crack, rust, or simply weren’t sized for this much continuous output, so the overflow switch either fails or the water finds a way around it.
    • Insulation sweats. Ductwork and lines running through hot attic space can develop condensation on the outside of the pipe, not just inside it, especially when the temperature swing between attic and duct is extreme.

    Any one of these can send water into a ceiling, a wall cavity, or a closet floor, often above the AC closet or in the attic, where nobody’s looking every day.

    None of these take more than a few minutes:

    • A ceiling stain, even a faint yellow or brown ring, especially under or near an attic unit

    Why “it looks dry” doesn’t mean it’s dry

What you might not know is that your air conditioner isn’t just fighting to keep your house cool right now — it’s also producing more condensation than usual, and that condensation has to go somewhere.

    Usually, it goes exactly where it’s supposed to: down a drain line and out of your house without you ever thinking about it.
